Barnett Jones

Barnett Jones is a highly accomplished public safety executive with over 40 years of experience in law enforcement, emergency response, and organizational integrity.

Background

Since 2016, Barnett Jones has served as the Chief Security and Integrity Officer for the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA), following his leadership in the same role at the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) beginning in 2012.

At GLWA, Jones is responsible for the Authority’s entire security posture—overseeing the physical safety of employees, facilities, infrastructure, and assets. He has also played a key role in developing and implementing integrity policies and procedures that support transparency, ethical conduct, and operational resilience across the organization.

Prior to joining GLWA, Jones held a range of high-level public safety roles across Michigan, including Chief of Police, Fire Chief, Police Administrator, and supervisory positions such as Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Deputy Sheriff. His rare experience leading both police and fire departments has given him a uniquely holistic view of emergency services and interdepartmental coordination.

Jones holds a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies from Eastern Michigan University, a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Madonna University, and a Bachelor’s in General Studies from the University of Michigan–Dearborn. He is certified by the State of Michigan as a K–12 school administrator and is a graduate of both the FBI National Academy and the U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection Program. He is also a certified firefighter, rounding out his broad-based expertise in public safety.

With a career defined by leadership, accountability, and service, Barnett Jones remains a trusted authority in regional security and integrity operations.
